GOSPEL OF JOHN: Easter Parade, The Passion of Christ, Ben-Hur, Hop, and...DIE HARD? Christmas movie, sure. But Easter? Hear me out. McClane is a Christ figure. Assaulted by the forces of evil in his attempt to save/redeem everyone. He strips down, shedding his earthly garments. He's barefoot and his hands and feet are cut with glass. These marks, or "stigmata," correspond to the marks on Christ during the crucifixion. When McClane washes his own feet, like Christ did his disciples, he is being absolved of his past sins, emerging, then, as a changed and better man. His name translates to "Yahweh/God is gracious." Plus, McClane's line, "Up to the man upstairs," refers both literally to Gruber and symbolically to God, linking his struggle to divine intervention. In summation: He descends from the sky (via plane), suffers greatly for the sake of others (barefoot, bruised, bloody), fights evil (terrorists), and frees the "captives" (hostages), leading to a "resurrection" of sorts as he reunites with his family. Boom. Easter movie. Come to think of it. It might be more Easter than Christmas. I mean, heck, it's downright scriptural.
